How to choose sights on a first visit
Think in three blocks: Wulingyuan core (Forest Park / Tianzi / Yuanjiajie), Tianmen Mountain south of the city, then the Grand Canyon or nearby culture stops. Three days cover the first two well; four to five days can add the canyon, Baofeng Lake, or Phoenix Ancient Town.

- 3. Tianzi Mountain West Sea Peak Forest and Imperial Brush Peak form a high ridge circuit, often paired with Yuanjiajie the same day. From above, the “sea of peaks” finally makes sense.
- 4. Tianmen Mountain Glass walkway, Tianmen Cave, cableway, and the 99 bends—high drama. Treat it as its own half-day to full day, and arrive early.
- 5. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge A world-famous glass bridge over a deep gorge. Great for thrill-seekers and photographers; pair with canyon trails or other activities.
- 6. Baofeng Lake A calm lake among peaks—boat rides show mirror reflections and ease tired legs after hiking days. Ideal on rainy or relaxed half-days.
- 7. Huanglong Cave A dramatic karst cave with stalagmites, draperies, and an underground river—excellent for families and rainy-day backups.
- 8. Golden Whip Stream A gentle valley walk beside clear water. Link it with Huangshizhai or the Bailong route; don’t treat it as a mere pass-through.
- 9. Qixing Mountain Known for glass corridors and cliff swings—best if you’ve already done the classic peaks and want more adrenaline.
- 10. Phoenix Ancient Town About 3–5 hours from Zhangjiajie, with riverside night views and Miao/Tujia culture. Add 1–2 nights when time allows for a perfect nature–culture balance.
How to string a first itinerary
Classic 3 days: Days 1–2 in Wulingyuan (Yuanjiajie + Tianzi + stream/Huangshizhai), Day 3 at Tianmen. Day 4 can add the Grand Canyon or Baofeng Lake; five-plus days can include Phoenix.
